Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need special software to create an OMR answer sheet?

No. Microsoft Word plus a free OMR font is enough. The font renders characters as scannable bubbles, so you only need a table and the right typeface.

Which OMR font should I use — Bubble, Rectangle, or Square?

All three are scannable by FormRead. Bubble is the most familiar (Scantron-style circles), Square is easiest to fill in quickly, and Rectangle works well when space is tight. Pick whichever matches your audience.

Does the size of the bubble matter?

Yes — keep every bubble the same size. OMR scanners detect filled bubbles based on the percentage of dark pixels inside the circle, so inconsistent sizing can cause false positives or misses.

Can I print the sheet in black and white?

Yes, black on white paper is the best choice. Avoid colored or glossy paper — the contrast helps the scanner reliably tell a filled bubble from an empty one.

Do I need a Scantron machine to scan the result?

No. The sheets you create with this tutorial are designed for software OMR. You can scan them with FormRead using any smartphone camera or standard office scanner — no dedicated hardware required.
